New Leadership in TMEA

Attention members! There are many ways to serve the music education profession but taking on a major leadership position in our state association is one of the most important commitments a TMEA member can make. To lead and serve over 1,500 Tennessee music educators is a major responsibility. Those who have served as officers, board members, state chairs or other positions of responsibility in TMEA can feel the immense personal satisfaction from having invested their time, effort, and expertise to support the mission and goals of TMEA. Please take time to consider the positions described below and don’t hesitate to step forward if you feel you are able to make your contribution as a leader in the association, or if you know someone that you want to recommend.

The TMEA Board of Directors has announced the opening of a new position – Associate Manager of the TMEA State Music Conference. The person appointed to that position will shadow our current Conference Manager during the 2010 State Music Conference to become familiar with all that is involved with managing our state conference. It is planned that the Associate Manager for 2010 will be considered for the position of Conference Manager. TMEA members who are interested in that position should contact TMEA President Gary Wilkes.

At the end of this fiscal year, June 30th, our five State Chairs will rotate off of the Board and new leaders will assume those positions. While that may seem like a long time off, President-Elect Ron Rogers plans to identify the Chair-elects as soon as possible so that they may shadow the current State Chairs during the remainder of their terms. Any member who might be interested in serving or who would want to recommend someone to serve in any of these position (see listing of those positions on page 2), should contact TMEA President-Elect Ron Rogers.

This year, TMEA will identify two candidates for the position of TMEA President-Elect for the 2010-2012 term. The election for that position will occur just after our state conference by electronic voting. After having served for two years, the President-Elect will take over as President of the Association for a two-year term beginning July 1, 2012. Any member may recommend a nominee as long as the person being nominated has agreed to the nomination. Nominations should be sent to TMEA Past-President and Chair of the DaCapo Committee – Ron Meers.

New Horizons Tour & Travel agrees to seven year commission project

The Tennessee Music Education Association has entered into a seven year agreement with New Horizons Tour & Travel, Inc., continuing a similar relationship with New Horizons from previous years. The agreement provides the funding to support the commissioning of a new musical work each year for the next seven for each of the Tennessee All-State ensembles and the Treble Honor Chorus. Tentatively, it is planned to begin the cycle with a new work for the Treble Honor Chorus to be performed at this spring’s State Music Conference.

New Horizons, one of the country’s premier music group travel companies, is excited to participate in this project once again. New Horizons provides domestic and international music performance tours for students from all 50 states. This project ties directly to New Horizons’ vision of providing amazing musical experiences for students.
