Notice on TMEA Conference/All-State:

The Tennessee Music Education Association will cancel this year’s Professional Development Conference and the associated Tennessee High School All-State Bands, Orchestras and Choirs, the Treble Choir and the All-Collegiate Orchestra. This decision was not made lightly and involved input from regional music education leaders from across the state.

TMEA is of the view that bringing together almost 1000 students and 800 teachers from across the state falls well outside the social distancing norms being recommended all across the nation and is not in the best interest of our students, educators or their families. It was also the collective opinion that rescheduling was not an option given the uncertainty of school system schedules for the coming months.

While we do not know what the future holds, at the time of the writing of this letter more than 75% of Tennessee All-State students attend schools that have been closed due to Covid-19 concerns and Davidson County/Nashville, the State of Tennessee and the United States government have all declared medical states of emergency.

As you would imagine the TMEA Conference and Tennessee All-State is a complex event involving students, parents and teachers from across Tennessee as well as presenters and exhibitors from across the country. Informing all those connected with the event in a timely manner was also a part of our decision timing.

We know this decision creates disappointment in our hardworking and dedicated student musicians and we all certainly share in that disappointment. More information will be shared soon about our ideas to find new ways to recognize these students and their accomplishments.  For now stay healthy and make the most of time together with family.

Sincerely,

Lafe Cook
