It is with great excitement and enthusiasm that I announce the second annual TMEA All State Modern Band! With a desire to stay on the cutting edge of innovative and culturally inclusive approaches to music education, our hope is that the TMEA All State Modern Band will provide students from across our state with a musically edifying and affirming experience. This year, we will hold the TMEA All State Modern Band Clinic on March 21st – 23rd at Battle Ground Academy in Franklin, TN. A video performance will be featured the following week at the TMEA Conference in Nashville, TN. Below are details regarding audition requirements, guidelines, instrumentation/voicing, and the event.
2024 AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
Students must be in grades 9th – 12th during the 2023-2024 school year.
Students must be a member of their school’s choral, string, guitar, instrumental ensemble, or a general music class during the 2023-2024 school year.
Students must be sponsored by a school ensemble director who is a current, active member of TNMEA / NAfME.
Audition Fees are $20 per student made out to TMEA and mailed by February 1st to Briarcrest Christian School (Michael Parsons) 76-South Houston Levee Road Eads, TN 38028
2024 AUDITION GUIDELINES
Auditions will open via Jotform on January 8th, 2024. Teachers are required to upload an unedited video of their student(s) performing the required material for their instrument or voice part by February 1st, 2024.
The video should not include any visible indication of which school the student is from, nor should it include the student’s name.
Students may record each part of their audition separately and choose the best “take” of each song. All videos should be combined into one file and organized in the correct order as indicated below.
The final determination of acceptance for the TNMEA Modern Band is made by a national panel of judges.
Results will be posted by February 8th, 2024.

TNMEA Modern Band Event
Selected students will participate in a clinic and performance in Nashville, TN March 21st – 23rd at Battle Ground Academy. The 2024 TNMEA All State Modern Band will be directed by Steven Potaczek, Director of Commercial Music at Samford University. The final performance will be professionally filmed and recorded and will be played back at the TNMEA Conference.
